Notion AI Credits: What Changes for Existing Workspaces on November 2, 2026
Notion moves existing Business and Enterprise workspaces to its new AI credit system on November 2, 2026, giving each member 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits a month that reset monthly and do not roll over. Notion's help center states the date and the allowances, so any team that used Notion AI without watching a usage meter now has a monthly cap, and the admin decides whether the workspace can pay for overage.
Key facts
- New Business and Enterprise workspaces moved to the credit system on October 19, 2026. Existing workspaces move on November 2, 2026.
- Each member gets 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits a month. Notion adds that the amount may vary by plan and purchase arrangement.
- Both pools reset monthly and do not roll over. They cannot be combined, traded or moved between members.
- Workspace "Notion credits" are a separate balance an admin can buy: $10 per 1,000 credits on monthly billing, $13 per 1,000 on annual billing.
- AI Meeting Notes start consuming Standard credits on December 1, 2026, at an estimated 10 Standard credits per meeting hour.
Which credits pay for what
Standard credits cover work where Notion picks the model. That includes Notion Agent on Auto, AI editing, page translation, AI blocks and AI database formulas. Select credits cover work where you pick a model yourself, plus Custom Agents. By default a Custom Agent spends its owner's Select credits, even when the owner shares it with the whole team.
Some usage sits outside both pools. Models with high credit consumption can only be paid for with workspace Notion credits. Workers, in beta, use no credits for now. Notion also states that everyday read and write actions through Notion MCP and the Notion API do not use credits, though running an agent through a connected app or the API does.
What happens when a pool runs out
When a member exhausts one kind of credit, features that use it pause until the next reset. The exception is workspace Notion credits: if an admin allows it, usage continues on that balance after the Standard or Select credits are gone. Notion says the workspace extra-usage option is off by default.
That default is the part worth checking today. A team that leans on Custom Agents drains Select credits quickly, because only 500 arrive per member and each agent run draws on its owner's pool. A 10-person workspace gets 15,000 Standard and 5,000 Select credits a month in total, but a heavy agent owner cannot borrow from colleagues.
What overage costs
Notion estimates that simple tasks use about 5 credits, medium tasks about 10 and complex tasks about 25. At the published monthly rate of $10 per 1,000 credits, one credit costs one cent, so a complex task bought with workspace credits comes to roughly 25 cents. At the annual rate of $13 per 1,000, it is about 32 cents. This is our arithmetic from Notion's figures, not a Notion price per task.
Monthly credits reset each month, and annual credits expire when the subscription renews, so neither type is a store of value. Notion's own FAQ answers the question of whether annual credits are cheaper than monthly ones with a plain no.
Free and Plus plans
The allowances apply to Business and Enterprise. An independent write-up by Matthias Frank states that the announcement does not introduce the same included credit package for Free or Plus. We did not find a Free or Plus allowance on Notion's pages.
What to do this week
- Open Settings, then Notion AI, then Usage, and read your actual allowance. Notion says it can differ from 1,500 and 500.
- Decide whether the workspace may spend Notion credits after the pools run out, and set a budget before you switch it on.
- List who owns Custom Agents. Their Select credits fund every run, so heavy owners need an admin-funded budget or a lighter workflow.
- Plan for December 1. If your team records many meetings, 10 Standard credits per hour adds up against a 1,500 pool shared with every other Auto feature.
- Review what you pay per seat. Our piece on why per-seat pricing is breaking explains why vendors keep adding a usage meter on top of the seat, and the GPT-5.6 Luna price cut shows how model costs move underneath such meters. More pricing coverage is in the article archive.
